Certainly outside of the UK. But, as I said, the terms English and British are frequently seen as synonymous though not so with Scottish and British. Netherlands has a similar situation in that it is often referred to as Holland.
That said, yes I have been mistakenly called English in UK on a number of occasions. Both in Scotland and in England.

I have no doubt there are people who would and do make such mistakes despite the great diversity in regional accents in Scotland. As indeed there is in England.
No doubt there are those who couldn't geographically place Adge Cutler or Allan Smethurst on accent alone.
