At one time, candidates could stand for election under a description of their own choosing. Unfortunately, after the Lib (???) Dems felt hard done to by a candidate who stood under the label of 'Literal Democrats', legislation was passed restricting candidates to the label of 'Independent' unless they were candidates of a registered political party.

So, the only remaining scope for variety [interpret that as you may!] is in candidates' names. Women already vary their titles between Miss, Ms and Mrs and between their maiden and married names. Every reason then to go the whole hog and adopt yet another name! Will any male candidates be following suit we ask?

Perhaps there will be more than one Rhodri Morgan standing in the next Welsh Assembly elections, and more than one Alex Salmond (Alec Salmon?) and even a Sean Connery in the next elections for the Scottish Parliament? If that happens, I can just see the legislative draftsmen sharping up their quills!

In the meantime, it is to be hoped that Miss Lumley in one form or another will bring the prominence we all desire to the campaign for a separate parliament for England!
