I would also prefer a situation where we grew enough essential foods here in the UK to feed our own population. Luxury foods can be imported, that is not a problem.
We should aim to be self-sufficient in power and Nuclear can provide that.
Defence is the primary reason we suffer the existence of the state, so indeed it should defend our borders properly.
However to be a successful nation we could be a net importer of manufactured goods and have a service and information economy. We'd have to be very determined and very efficient to be able to produce more and higher quality information than the new superpowers though.
Ultimately a varied economy would be best.
