OK, let’s look at immigration to Britain, in particular illegal immigration and bogus, sorry, failed asylum seekers.
Government figures in 2005 put the number of illegal immigrants at around a half million whereas informed opinion based on what is seen on the streets puts the number today at around a million.
Then there are the “failed asylum seekers”. Half a million? Possibly around that number, probably a lot more more.
So there is a problem.
Throw in the number of legitimate immigrants, many taking work that British people could do but won’t because it’s easier to draw the dole or “go on the Invey” and the problem moves out of the domain of being a problem and into that of being a disaster.
No surprise there for most of us.
The question then arises what to do.
“Throw them out” scream the BNP knuckle draggers, “Repatriate them and get us out of the EU” from others desperate to return to the Good Old Days (long gone and never to return).
The bottom line is that there is no simple answer, in fact to a considerable degree there is no answer at all. at least non that would be relatively straightforward.
Let’s take the simple and most obvious group, those here illegally.
There’s half a million of them and probably more.
Apart from ANYTHING else how many of the “sling ‘em out” crowd have considered the astronomical task the sheer logistics of deporting so many people would present.
My guess is precious few and that actually precious few can even contemplate what would be involved.
(Bear with me, I’m getting somewhere soon!)
Apart from anything else the investigation work, the detention, the housing whilst awaiting deportation, the determination of where to deport them to, the difficulty of getting their homelands to accept them back even if they could be identified as belonging to somewhere, the marshalling of them together, the transport, is all going to be a monumental task, and that’s just the mechanics of it.
Then there would be the civil unrest in the country as the job got under way.
People like the Archbishop of Canterbury and his sort howling about the un-Christian inhumanity of it all, the legal immigrants who objected to family members being thrown out, the British Left who saw the whole thing as being part of a Right Wing ploy that the “Joos” were behind, (they always get roped in, they always do) and that’s just the most obvious who would oppose such a move.
In short it would be a job that was just too dammned big to do.
Then even if it were possible there would be the UN to consider.
You can just bet there would be whoops of delight from The Usual Suspects as they played every card they could, and not just them, but also our allies as political parties in their own countries played the “rotten British” card, and they would.
So is there a solution? Actually there may be, one that comes out from the dreadful position we are in today.
Address what it is that attracts the buggers in the first place.
Step back from the ECHR for a start.
Step back from the 1951 UN Convention Relating to refugees. For one ting the US (as far as I know) never signed up to it and for another, as a nation we’re full to overflowing.
Next reform The Welfare State. It is long past the need to restore it to a safety net from the career choice it has become let alone the market in which governments buy votes.
Next work within Europe to ensure our partner states set about doing exactly the same.
Actually most of them are far more strict already on clamping down on illegal immigrants and now on any immigrants.
It’s another example of our dreadful government, especially New Labour term, that’s put us where we are.
The only practical way now to resolve it is to address what they used that attracted the illegal immigrants to us in the first place.
