A 'large' [quote] bribe was paid by the unscrupulous Jewish leaders to the Roman soldiers who had kept guard and were 'shaken' with fear when the entrance to Christ's grave rolled away on the third day to reveal a resurrected Christ (Matthew 28 v 4).
The Jewish leaders gained by thereby suppressing faith in Christ; the Roman soldiers got an unexpected bonus for lying. By this time Judas had already topped himself, overcome with guilt after betraying his master for 30 pieces of silver
