It's all well and good looking at history through modern eyes but you must also keep in mind the realities of the time. Learn from mistakes and misadventures but refrain from judging unless you are completely sure you can be fair in doing so.
I would argue that on the whole the British Empire was a force for good in the world, not evil.

I'd say it was a force for evil with some good in it. I don't think calling it a force for good is right because it encourages people that such behaviour as invading and conquering is fine.
We can certainly look at the historical context and comment that others were doing it as well. The most important thing is condemning similar conduct today.
