The extremely rapid rise of Lisa Duffy from nowhere to receiving more votes than Farage to get on the NEC and being appointed head of the youth group in a matter of weeks highlights an interesting problem that I have written about before. The party doesn't have a structure in place to provide a ladder for up and coming people. In other words, there is no way to provide experience and testing. In a well run organisation, what Lisa Duffy has done would be nigh on impossible because there would be so many other well known candidates waiting in the wings with more experience and proven abilities within the party.

I am sure that she is absolutely competent and a good choice for the roles she now has. However, although it is a good sign that they are seeking new talent, the fact that she has been brought in and promoted so swiftly indicates that there isn't a healthy system in place.

One way of finding new talent would be to have a shadow cabinet with a small team of advisors and researchers behind each appointment. This would provide up to fifty or so positions where new people could prove themselves, build up some experience, get some media training, get their names known, make some contacts and friends etc.

The fact that UKIP doesn't have this system is going to leave it in trouble when it comes to the next EU elections. They are going to need a national and regional teams of competent and motivated people to promote the campaign, but where will they find them?
