No, it was part of the deal that let me stay in Britain, be educated, receive medical care, be assured that I would be housed and fed at all times, in short, benefit from what society provides.
Once I achieved majority I had a choice. Accept the pay and rations or bail out. I and others decided to accept the pay and rations, with that comes requirement to march to the drum.
It's a shame the lead item on this thread has gone astray because I think it does raise a very important issue.
