You're both mature adults with lots of posts under your belts. I freely admit that I haven't been moderating the posts in the E&E section as much as I should primarily because I (and I suspect many others) cannot be bothered to wade through the passionate yet heated debate from both sides.

It's clearly a subject that raises intense emotions and I can understand that as most environmentalists are calling for Government intervention to solve the issues that environmentalists think need solving. Likewise many environmentalists feel that the lack of government intervention will cause disasters. I truly understand your passions.

However: this forum has always been a place where the dominant train of thought is that of small-government, not necessarily libertarianism but certainly along the lines of libertarianism, anarchism and conservatism.

To suggest government intervention here is like going to a gay pride forum and suggesting that homosexuality become illegal again.

Now any sensible and balanced person would realise that within a few minutes of arriving here.

Clippo, I have been ridiculously lenient on you because I know you've been subjected to abuse. I've warned you softly a number of times that you should not abuse other people but I am sad to see that this warning was disregarded.

Likewise, Matt, some of your posts have been blatantly antagonistic but I accept that many have been in response to abuse coming your way. I also think you've been more restrained recently and thanks for that.

Can't we all work out a way of abiding peacefully here?
The "ignore list" and "report abuse" functions are there for your use and most people have been using them. E&E remains the one place where sensible discussion appears to be impossible virtually all of the time.

Often the debate is not about what needs to be done but whether the entire issue is a con or not. Hence your statement regarding the dominant line of thought on this forum is not really applicable.
And just because something is the dominant line of thought it does not mean it is right, and
it does not mean that contrary views should not be expressed, or that any sign of abuse, from either side, should be tolerated.
Given that virtually every thread with a post by Matt in contains yet another insult or term of clear derogation - envirofascist (and just plain fascist), bull****ter, con artist, cult, religion, voodooist - or even claims of just plain lying (George got banned for calling Britannist a liar ten times. I think that Matt has called numerous people liars many times more than that, even if he doesn't use the term itself!) I really don't think it could be said that he is restraining himself at all.
You should be sad to see that both of them, not just Clippo, are resorting to insults; indeed, that anyone is.
And even sadder to see that they feel the need, whether it be the first blow or in response.
The blame here can't really be traced to anyone in particular; it is now as tangled a web of attack and counter-attack as the Crusades were. The blame does not lie with Matt; it does not lie with Clippo.
