Ever since the war the Liberal party has increasingly moved towards a pan-European agenda. It was inadvertantly assisted in this drift by the loss of its 'patriotic' wing in the 30's.
Clegg typify's its pro-EU leadership, urbane, professional politician and EU carearist. Popularism (as a last resort) saw them supporting a referendum on European issues. Once the stark reality, of having a referendum that might see his beloved EU being given a bloody nose, became clear he was always going to frustrate that possibility. However his latest blunder has served merely to highlight their hypocracy over the Lisbon Treaty rather than divert everyone's gaze. The first real challenge for his leadership and he has failed miserably. Perhaps the merciless Ming had an inkling into the future?
