They only want a referendum on the entire membership issue because they believe they can win it and therefore further the advancement of Britain's commitment to the European Union (which they want). That's a strategic political move, not a matter of well intended principle with the British people at heart.
I'm sure the LibDems don't support a referendum on the EU "Constititonal Treaty"?
