"English back UK but do not think it will last & want Scot voting to end" - new poll
The most extensive opinion poll for some time on the views of the people of England on the Union of the UK is published this morning in the Sunday Telegraph - at the start of the Daily Telegraph's "Call yourself British" campaign.
The poll was carried out by ICM.
Main findings in the opinion poll:
* Over 6 out of every 10 English people regard feel British.
* 69% of English people want the Union of England with Scotland to go on.
* 48% of English people think that the UK will survive for no more than 25 years.
* 59% of those English people quizzed by ICM believe that the Union of the UK will cease to exist in 50 years (or less).
* 18% of English people think that the UK will last indefinitely.
* 57% of English people back the establishment of a UK football team (34% oppose this idea).
* 62% of English people questioned by ICM say that Scottish constituency MPs must not vote on English and Welsh legislation before the House of Commons.
* 63% of English people think that higher public spending in Scotland than in England is not justifiable.
* 59% of English people would call themselves English if ask to by a foreigner - 37% would sa that they were British.
* 27% of voters think that the Conservatives are more likely than the Labour Party to stand up for the people of England than the Labour Party is - 10% think that the Labour Party is more likely to defend English interests than the Conservatives would.
