He has the power to promise and deliver big tax cuts if he has to - last weekend the Australian Labour opposition leader Kevin Rudd pledged tax cuts as big as those promised by Prime Minister Howard. Many electors liked what they heard and consequently replaced Mr. Howard with Mr. Rudd as their Prime Minister the same day.
Gordon Brown is in the driving seat and has two and half years to rectify any errors he and his team have made so far.
I would be very pleased if Labour lost the next General Election - but I recall 'false dawns' for Labour opposition leader Kinnock in 1987 and 1992 when he was defeated in General Elections despite having been previously well ahead of the Conservative Government in opinion polls.
