I wouldn't say that the UK is to be abolished on 1.1.2009 - politically, and economically weakened and neutered militarily is what the EU wants first for the UK. If/when it has achieved that it would/will find it easier to dissolve our ancient nation into an EU Superstate at a time of its choosing.
For the EU to wreck the UK as a fully-functioning sovereign entity it first needs to make it more fragile - through devolution and through its europhile supporters gaining powerful positions in the party of Government (as they have done) and in other parties whose key figures pretend to be patriotic.
