Well you'd be surprised. I commuted to London from Portsmouth for years before I learned that one of my colleagues firmly believed I came up from Plymouth every day!
You can't have had a very high profile in Portsmouth Tories, Anthony. I was an officer of Portsmouth South for years and since my name is Smith I'd certainly have remembered someone called Smithee.
