Proposals to impose 20 mph speed limits on thousands of residential streets policed by yet more speed cameras have been slammed by the UK Independence Party.
which is the issue - the speed or the cameras's?
I would the cameras as since they've been introduced the death rate on the roads , which was reducing, has plateaued

"Road safety is obviously important and safeguarding pedestrians, particularly vulnerable children, is paramount. But this latest idea from the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport safety is not the way to tackle the problem," said John Whittaker, chairman of UKIP.

"Young school children do not receive the same level of road safety training as they used to do. Let's scrap the trendy 'citizenship' classes and return to teaching our children invaluable road safety lessons, both as pedestrians and cyclists
True, road safety lessons would be a good idea but this from JW almost suggests that the driver has no responsibility - it's the victims fault.
Many pedestrians and cyclist walk out without looking - I hope they don't drive like that but I suspect they do - The motorist is usually seen as a handy scapegoat - didn't the EU propose that any RTA would be automatically blameed on the motorist at one point

"Drivers may end up more concerned about keeping an eye on their speedometer than the road, which is plainly counterproductive," said Dr Whittaker, the party's North West Euro MP
if true, then true of all speed limits.

"The citizens of this country are already the most watched by surveillance cameras in Europe. This is another way of raiding the pockets of motorists and reinforcing the government's nanny state attitude," he added.
No, it's a way of raiding the pockets of those who - basically - break the law. I personally don't want more speed camera's but if, applied sensibly in built up areas - say around schools, I would support them, providing that the income generated went, say, to providing extra-curricular road safety lessons and helping kids out of the school run culture onto bikes or walking.

In general, I support a 20 limit in built up areas, particularly around schools.
Do you get the feeling that many speed limits have been lowered over the past few years to enable more fines to raise money

20 outside schools yes during term time and at the correct time
