Michael Foot, as Labour leader, made the claim that he would take the UK out of the EEC/EU in the Labour Party Manifesto of 1983 - but I never believed him. I was quite convinced that had Labour won that election it would not have kept the promise (i.e. there would have been another sham so-called 'renogotiation' of the UK membership terms of the EEC/EU).
