It was a mistake for David Cameron to urge Conservative MPs to stand up and give Blair a standing ovation (on Blair's last appearance in the House of Commons). Apart from anything else, Labour would never do the same for a Conservative Prime Minister.

I think some Conservatives were jubilant at Blair's departure from the Commons (hence their participation in the standing ovation) thinking that it would lead to a new political era in which the Cameron-Conservatives moved into a big opinion poll lead.

So far, the exact reverse has happened.
