It's OK if the image is on a dedicated server for the purposes of display elsewhere (ie: Photobucket, Flickr) but if it is just someones personal, or business, website then if the image is shown elsewhere often it will begin to affect that persons website (first by slowing it down considerably) and secondly by the hosting provider initiating penalties against the owner of that site.
Take a look at the above example.
http://www.jewishartshop.com/. Clearly a business (dreadful website!, perhaps I could offer my services . . . ), and by this forum linking to the image on it's server we are stealing their bandwidth.
Because this is a web forum, the page is viewed perhaps 20 or 30 times a day, while the thread is active, and this can result in a major drain of bandwidth.
