Up to 40,000 Irish jobs could be at risk as a result of proposed new EU regulations, according to Fianna Fáil MEP Liam Aylward.
The European Parliament is due to debate the regulations on the control of chemicals within the EU today.
Speaking ahead of the discussion, Mr Aylward said he wanted a balance to be found between protecting jobs and protecting the environment.
"We have to be mindful, particularly in Ireland, of the importance of small to medium-sized enterprise and some of our larger industries such as the pharmaceutical industry, who are worth something like €34bn to the Irish economy," he said
