Howard gives protégé major election role
Telegraph Article
Quote:
Michael Howard is to make his protégé David Cameron the Conservatives' election policy supremo in what many Tory MPs believe is part of a "master plan" to groom him as a future party leader.
Mr Cameron, 38, who has enjoyed a swift rise INTO phpbb_the Shadow Cabinet under Mr Howard, will be given a seat on the general election planning team alongside co-chairmen, Lord Saatchi and Liam Fox, and the new campaign director, Lynton Crosby.
Sources said Mr Cameron, the Eton-educated MP for Witney, was central to Mr Howard's election plans and his thinking about the future.
He would coordinate Tory policies during the campaign, and have a central role promoting them on the media – a role which will pit him against Alan Milburn, the Blairite former health secretary.
It is also understood that one of Mr Cameron's friends, George Osborne, the 33-year-old MP for Tatton who is shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, will be pushed in the media during the campaign to convey a new and younger image for the party.
