French legal (official) language of the EU
Last weekend's papers announced a French led campaign to have French enshrined as the language of Law in the EU.
I am irritated by this. It is one of my old ideas that I have shared with others that Britain should propose that English be endorsed as the universal business and commercial language across the EU. This debate is inevitable. This one issue if managed properly can do more to break up the EU than anything else. The ruckus would be beautiful to behold and Britain can cite all the facts that justify the proposition. So strong are the factors in favour of English that Britain can make a solid proposal out of it regardless of whether Britain stays in the EU or not.
News reports in recent time have said that Orly Airport now requires all incoming flight communications to be in English and also that the French scientific institute which receives academic submissions now requires that they be English. (I can't vouch for the truth of these).
Come on one of our MEP's. Put together a strong factual case for the EU to endorse English as its primary language, something that will blow the French proposal out of the water, and present it to the EU commissions.
We all want to sit back and watch the fireworks.
