I suppose that it comes down to tribal loyalties. People who support a particular cause/team/party tend ignore the stories that don't conform to their desired image of thir party. By the same effect, any positive news is amplified to represent far more than it really does. Hence people tend to stick with their parties and become deaf to bad news.
Then there is the current phenomenon that all political parties are seen as untrustworthy. If they are all the same, why not stick with the one you know best? The alternatives just don't look great to the electorate.
