You can always tell when Tory leaders are in trouble - they resort to playing the race card. But I hadn't realised that Michael Howard was in quite that much trouble.

Well, this is lazy journalism at its worst. Capping immigration has nothing to do with racism. The points system proposed by the Tories and the UKIP does not take INTO phpbb_account race at all. It is based on the ability of a person to contribute to British society and their need to leave their own country.
If a person can't meet the requirements then either they aren't in desperate need for asylum or they are an economic immigrant without skills or the ability to speak English.
By capping, we actually mean setting a target number. That doesn't mean that the 100,001st person to apply won't be let in, it means that the level of need or skill will be monitored and adjusted to ensure that only around 100,000 people enter the country.
I personally don't think that we should be setting a limit on the numbers, I think that we should be setting the limits on the points system. If 200,000 people have strong skills and speak English or are fleeing torture in their own country, then let them in.
